Leben in Deutschland vs. Einbürgerungstest - What's the Difference?

These two terms cause confusion for almost everyone. Is it the same test? Two different tests? Which one do you need? Here's the clear answer.

Short answer

It's basically the same test. The question catalogue is identical: 463 questions, from which 33 are selected for your exam. You have 60 minutes, the format is multiple choice with four answer options. The two names are often used interchangeably in everyday language.

The official difference

"Leben in Deutschland" is the official name for the test you take at the end of an Integrationskurs. It is a fixed component of the course and is automatically held at the end of it.

"Einbürgerungstest" is what the test is called when you take it without a prior Integrationskurs; for example directly at a Volkshochschule or test center because you want to apply for a Niederlassungserlaubnis or German citizenship.

In practice, both terms are used synonymously; including on the BAMF website itself. The content is identical, only the occasion differs.
