Failed the Einbürgerungstest - What Now?

You didn't pass the Einbürgerungstest? First of all: don't panic. You're not alone. The pass rate is over 96 %, but that also means around 4 % of participants don't pass on their first try. It's not the end of the world; and here you'll find out what you can do now.

First, take a deep breath

A failed test feels terrible at first. Maybe you're disappointed, frustrated or unsettled. That's completely normal. But let me tell you: it really is not the end of the world. Many people need a second attempt; and then pass without any problems.

The Einbürgerungstest is not a judgment about you as a person. It tests knowledge, and knowledge can be learned. And that's exactly what you will do: prepare better and make it the next time.

How often can I retake the test?

Here's the good news: you can retake the Einbürgerungstest as many times as you like. There is no limit on the number of attempts. Each retake costs 25 euros as an exam fee; just like the first time.

When can I retake the test?

You can register for a new date immediately after receiving your result. Simply go to your Volkshochschule (VHS) or the test center where you took the test and sign up for the next available date. Depending on the location, exam dates are usually available every few weeks.

However, it's a good idea not to take the very next slot straight away, but to give yourself enough time for focused practice. Two to four weeks of intensive preparation can make a huge difference.

Why didn't I pass?

Before you sign up again, it's worth honestly analyzing what went wrong. The most common reasons are:

• Not enough preparation: many people underestimate the test and don't study enough. 17 out of 33 questions correct sounds easy; but only with practice it really is.
• Nervousness: exam anxiety can make you misread questions or mix up answers you actually know.
• Tricky wording: some questions are linguistically tricky. Words like "nicht" (not), "kein" (no) or "außer" (except) can completely reverse the meaning.
• Wrong focus: maybe you focused on the wrong topics and neglected important areas.

How to pass next time

With the right strategy you'll pass the test on your next attempt. Here's your plan:

• Use the "Fehler wiederholen" mode: target the questions you got wrong. This is how you close exactly the gaps that cost you points.
• Take practice exam simulations: practice under realistic conditions. If you consistently get 25 or more out of 33 questions correct, you're ready for the real test.

• Don't forget the Bundesland questions: the test includes 3 questions about your Bundesland. These are often easier than the general questions; that's 3 easy points you can pick up.
• Read every question carefully: pay special attention to words like "nicht" and "kein". Many mistakes happen from reading too fast, not from lack of knowledge.

Does a failed attempt have consequences?

No! A failed Einbürgerungstest has no negative consequences for your naturalization procedure. It is not recorded negatively anywhere how often you've taken the test. The Ausländerbehörde only cares that you eventually pass the test; not on which attempt.
